What OSNAP is

OSNAP (Object Snap) makes the cursor jump to meaningful points on existing geometry — endpoints, midpoints, centres, intersections — instead of an eyeballed pixel.

Why and when you use it

Every drawing needs geometry that truly connects. Without OSNAP, endpoints land a fraction off and TRIM, JOIN, HATCH and EXTRUDE all break later.

Where to find it in the AutoCAD interface

Ribbon: Status bar → Object Snap icon (looks like a small square with a dot).
Menu: Right-click the Object Snap icon → Object Snap Settings.
Command line: Type OSNAP and press Enter to open the settings dialog.
Alias / shortcut: F3 toggles OSNAP on/off.

Key vocabulary

Endpoint: Either tip of a line, arc or polyline segment.
Midpoint: The exact middle of a segment.
Center: The middle of a circle, arc or ellipse.
Intersection: The point where two objects cross.
Marker: The coloured glyph that appears under the cursor when a snap is found.

Before you start

Have a few intersecting lines and circles already drawn.
Press F3 once and watch the status bar icon — it should highlight blue when OSNAP is on.
Press F12 so dynamic input shows the snap tooltip next to the crosshair.

Common mistakes & fixes

Drawing without F3 on and wondering why JOIN fails.
Fix: Always check the status-bar Object Snap icon before you start.
Enabling every snap mode at once.
Fix: Too many modes fight each other. Keep four: Endpoint, Midpoint, Center, Intersection.
Clicking before the marker appears.
Fix: Wait for the coloured marker. If it's missing, you didn't snap.

Troubleshooting

No markers show up.Show

Cause: OSNAP is off, or no snap modes are checked.

Fix: Press F3, then right-click the icon and tick at least Endpoint and Midpoint.

Marker shows for the wrong point.Show

Cause: Multiple snap modes overlap on dense geometry.

Fix: Tap Tab to cycle through nearby snap candidates.

Practice exercise

Snapped triangle on three circles

Draw three circles at random positions.
Press F3 to confirm OSNAP is on.
Run LINE and snap the start point to the first circle's centre.
Snap the next two points to the other two centres.
Type C, Enter to close the triangle.

Success looks like: A triangle whose three vertices land exactly on the three circle centres — no offsets, no gaps.

Hold Shift + right-click during any command to pop up a one-shot snap menu.
Press Tab while hovering near overlapping geometry to cycle through snap candidates.
Turn Polar tracking (F10) on alongside OSNAP for accurate angled snapping.
